LED vs Halogen Globes

Heat production

Halogen globes produce a significant amount of heat, so much so that they can be a burn and fire hazard if installed in enclosed spaces with insulation or touched accidentally while on. LEDs, on the other hand, produce far less heat, remaining cool to the touch and safe for installation in more enclosed spaces.

Longevity

Because of the relative fragility of their components and high-heat generation, halogen globes suffer from shorter lifespans than LED globes. Generally, it’s accepted that a halogen globe will last on average between 1000 and 2000 hours, whereas an LED can last up to 50,000 hours.

Cost

While halogens have a cheaper upfront cost than LEDs, the efficiency of power usage and longer lifespan make LEDs the more cost-effective choice over time. Halogens use about 55 watts of electricity, whereas LEDs use around 10 watts. That’s one-fifth of the energy for the same brightness and a more modern lighting finish.

How they work

Halogen globes utilise traditional filament technology to generate heat and light, creating a warm, ambient light. However, this technology relies on fragile glass and wire filaments, which often means more frequent replacements. LED lights use a semiconductor diode to create light, with an electronic driver converting high-voltage AC power to the low-voltage DC that gives the LED its high efficiency ratings and more durable components.

Efficiency

Halogen globes are inefficient, with up to 90% of power being lost to heat as a byproduct of light generation, whereas LED globes only lose around 10-20% of power to heat.

LEDs in Sydney

Like any other product, longevity and efficiency are linked to the environment they’re used in, and the way they are being used. Fortunately for Sydney homeowners, the area’s temperate climate is perfect for the long life of LED globes, being neither too hot nor too humid to impact LED performance, as can be the case in the more tropical Northern areas of Australia.

Does LED Quality Really Matter?

Most LED companies focus on the output capacity of the LED diode, which can, under the best circumstances, run for upwards of 15 years. However, diode lifespan isn’t everything you need to consider when looking at LED lights: the overall quality of the fixture – especially the driver – will impact your LED lifespan, as it’s often the driver that fails in inferior-quality LEDs, not the actual diode. This is why quality is important when choosing LEDs for your house.

At Bucks Electrical, we primarily use Voltex, along with trusted brands such as Trend, BrightGreen, Atom, Martec, SAL, Brilliant, Domus, and Haneco. These brands offer the best mix of affordability and uncompromising quality, ensuring that the casings and drivers are as long-lasting as the LED diodes themselves.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes — LEDs save a significant amount of energy, especially if your Eastern Suburbs home has 40+ downlights. An LED will use approximately 10 watts of power, whereas a halogen uses about 55 watts, and if you’re still using traditional incandescent bulbs, that would be an eye-watering 100 watts for the same light output. Choosing LED downlights is a significant saving on your electricity consumption and your wallet.
Yes! On average, a halogen will produce around 700 lumens, whereas modern LED downlights can produce more than 1100 lumens.
Yes! While LEDs have a much brighter light capacity, they also offer the flexibility of being dimmable, giving you flexibility in your lighting design.
Colour temperatures of LED light range from warm to cool, i.e., 2700K – 3500K for the warm white range, 3500K – 4500K for the daylight or neutral white range, and 4500K – 6500K for the cool white range.
Yes! At Bucks Electrical, we always advise leaving the same number of lights despite them being brighter to save the need of having to patch and paint old holes, and you can always install dimmers to control the brightness to your liking – this ends up being more cost-effective than having to patch up old lighting holes.
