Why You Should Upgrade Your Switchboard

  • Damaged Switchboard – if your switchboard shows signs of damage, like scorching, rust or you notice a burning smell, it’s time for an upgrade.
  • Old Switchboard – older switchboards (usually 20-25 years and older) that still contain ceramic fuses instead of circuit breakers or have no safety switches (RDCs) fitted need upgrading, as they’re no longer safety compliant.
  • Frequent Tripping – Switchboards that trip frequently or won’t reset need upgrading.
  • Outdated Capacity – If you’re installing solar, want to power air conditioning or an EV, you need to check your switchboard has this capacity; otherwise an upgrade is necessary.

Still not sure if you need an upgrade? Call us or send us a picture of your switchboard to get expert advice. Obligation-free!

Our Electrical Switchboard Services in the Eastern Suburbs

Fuse Box to Modern
Switchboard Upgrade

Ceramic rewirable fuses were phased out because they posed severe safety risks, reacted too slowly to electrical faults, and could not handle the power demands of modern homes. A modern switchboard upgrade is essential for older homes in Sydney still using porcelain or ceramic fuses. We replace outdated fuse boxes with a modern switchboard using circuit breakers and current safety protections.

Electrical Safety Icon

Safety Switch /
RCD Upgrade

A Residual Current Device (RCD) is a life-saving safety switch that automatically cuts off the electricity supply when it detects a current imbalance, protecting people from electric shocks and preventing electrical fires. This upgrade is recommended for homes or businesses that don’t have RCD protection on all required circuits. We can add or upgrade safety switches to help protect people from electric shock.

Switchboard
Capacity Upgrade

If you’re adding new electrical loads to your Eastern Suburbs site, you may need a switchboard capacity upgrade. This is commonly needed for renovations where you’re adding extra circuits, installing solar or EV chargers and for running new air conditioning units.

Three-Phase
Switchboard Upgrade

Larger homes, commercial spaces or workshops tend to have a higher power demand, where a three-phase switchboard is required. Some appliances also require three-phase to work properly, including large air conditioners, EV chargers or other high-load appliances.

Surge Protection
Upgrade

A good option for homes and businesses wanting extra protection for appliances and electronics during power surges. Protection can be installed across the whole property or on selected circuits.

Stephen from Bucks Electrical has been absolutely fantastic! He’s done an amazing job on our old to new house renovation, including installing new switchboards, re-wiring, new lighting, fans, and fitting a pool pump and heater — everything has been completed to a top standard.

He’s professional, reliable, and clearly takes pride in his work. Everything was done efficiently, safely, and with great attention to detail. We couldn’t be happier with the results and highly recommend Bucks Electrical for any electrical work — big or small. Thanks again, Steve! 🙌

I can’t recommend Steve from Bucks Electrical (Eastern Suburbs) highly enough. He installed and wired two ceiling fans for me and the whole experience was outstanding from start to finish. His communication was quick, clear and easy, he arrived when he said he would, and he was extremely friendly, professional and trustworthy.

His pricing was very reasonable, and it’s genuinely hard to find a sparky who is not only skilled but also honest and reliable — Steve absolutely is. I felt completely comfortable having him in my home and the quality of his work was excellent.

I really, really liked dealing with him and would insanely highly recommend Steve to anyone looking for a great electrician.

Frequently Asked Questions

No — for safety, the power needs to be off while we work on your switchboard. How long it’s off will depend on the size and complexity of the job, from around 2 hours for a small board and up to a full day for larger or more complex upgrades.
Switchboard upgrades aren’t generally covered by home insurance, as it’s considered maintenance rather than damage. However, an unsafe or non-compliant board can affect a claim if something goes wrong later, so it’s worth checking with your insurer. There’s no dedicated NSW rebate for switchboard upgrades. If you’re upgrading alongside a solar installation, ask your installer whether any solar-specific incentives apply.
An upgrade won’t necessarily add to your home’s value, but it removes a safety hazard that can otherwise be flagged in a building inspection or during a sale and buyers and conveyancers often view a documented switchboard upgrade favourably. An upgrade can also make future insurance claims more straightforward since the board is compliant and certified.
Yes — this is one of the most common jobs we do. We replace old ceramic fuses with a modern circuit breaker board and safety switches.
Costs vary depending on the size of the board and what needs replacing, which is why we always give you a free, fixed-price quote before any work starts.
Possibly — these all add extra load to your board. We can tell you during your free quote whether an upgrade is needed to safely support them.
A switchboard upgrade replaces the board itself (fuses/breakers and safety switches). A rewire replaces the cabling throughout the property. Often only the switchboard needs updating, not the whole house wiring.
A switchboard isn’t automatically unsafe just because it’s old, but ceramic fuses and boards without safety switches don’t meet current safety standards. We’re happy to inspect it for free and give you a straight answer whether you need to change out your old switchboard to new.
You’re welcome to be on site, but there will be no power or internet for the duration of the job — your modem and router need power too. If you need to work, plan on running your laptop on battery and using a mobile hotspot for data until we reconnect the power.

I recently used Bucks Electrical to replace several lights and install a new feature light in my kitchen, and I couldn’t be happier with the service.

From the first contact, Steve was professional, responsive, and easy to deal with. Communication was excellent throughout the process, and he arrived exactly when they said they would. It’s refreshing to find a trades business that is so reliable and respectful of my time.

The quality of workmanship was outstanding. The new kitchen feature light was installed with detail and looks fantastic.

Everything was completed neatly, safely, and to a very high standard, with the work area left clean and tidy afterward.

Their pricing was also fair and represented excellent value for the quality of service provided.

I have no idea how, but Steve was able to route a new circuit through the ceiling cavity from one end of a Sydney terrace to the other without any significant reworks inside (just a small inspection hole). Quality stuff, on time, frank and prompt service, and saved me hundreds in not having to replaster the ceiling. Thanks Steve!
