The suburb was originally named Highfield, and the name "Caringbah" only came into use from 1911, after steam trams began running between Cronulla and Sutherland.
Thomas Holt, a 19th-century Australian politician, owned most of the land stretching from Sutherland all the way to Cronulla back in the 1860s.
The area was largely used for market gardening right up until after the Second World War, with orchards and farming continuing in the area until after World War II, before the Cronulla railway line opened in 1939.
Caringbah originally stretched from Woolooware Bay on the Georges River all the way to Yowie Bay and Burraneer Bay on the Port Hacking estuary, but several of those areas were later declared separate suburbs (like Caringbah South, which officially split off in 2008 and today has a memorial fountain to Elizabeth Batts Cook, wife of explorer James Cook).
